The loop, from intake to exhaust

Attic ventilation works on a simple convection idea: cool, dry air comes in low, and warm, moist air goes out high. The soffit is the intake end. Fresh air enters through the vented panels at the roof edge, travels up the underside of the roof deck, and leaves through exhaust vents near the ridge or high on the slope. As long as that current keeps moving, several good things happen at once.

  • It holds down attic humidity, so moisture from the house below and the outside air doesn't condense on the cold underside of the deck.
  • It sheds summer heat, keeping the attic — and the shingles baking above it — cooler than they'd otherwise run.
  • It lets wet wood dry at the roof edge, because moving air carries dampness away instead of letting it sit.
  • It stretches the roof's life by easing the heat-and-moisture cycling that ages sheathing, underlayment, and shingles from below.

The catch is balance. Intake and exhaust have to roughly match for the loop to pull. All the ridge venting in the world accomplishes little if the soffit intake is choked, because there's nothing feeding fresh air in at the bottom.

What the soffit is, if you've never looked up

Stand under the eave and look up: the horizontal (or gently sloped) surface closing off the overhang is the soffit. It spans the gap between the fascia at the roof edge and the exterior wall, and it's quietly doing three things at once. It finishes the eave, hiding the rafter tails and the raw underside of the roof. It seals the roof edge against wind, rain, and animals that would otherwise nest in the overhang. And — when it's the vented type, either perforated panels or panels fitted with vent strips — it ventilates. That third role is the one homeowners underestimate, and it's exactly where a soffit stops being decorative trim and becomes part of the roof's health.

Why the vents go quiet

Because soffit vents sit overhead and out of mind, they're easy to close off by accident. A few usual suspects account for most cases.

By far the most common is insulation shoved into the eaves. When attic insulation is packed too far toward the roof edge, it smothers the vents from the inside and strangles the intake. Baffles are supposed to hold an air channel open at that point, but they're often missing or crushed. Close behind is paint — repeated repainting of a vented panel can slowly bridge and seal its perforations, turning a working vent into a solid board without anyone noticing. You can catch a lot of this from the ground or a stable ladder, and some of it from inside the attic on a flashlight tour. None of it is conclusive alone, but together the signs are telling.

  • Mould or dark growth on the soffit, on the fascia, or — inside — on the roof sheathing.
  • Staining or discoloration spreading across the soffit panels.
  • Peeling or blistering paint at the eave, often a sign of moisture behind the fascia.
  • Sagging, soft, or warped soffit panels, which point to moisture the material can no longer shed.
  • A musty smell hanging around the eaves or in the attic.
  • Attic heat that feels excessive in summer, or condensation and frost on the deck in winter.
  • Ice dams that keep coming back at the eave in cold weather.

Any one of these can have another explanation. Several of them together strongly suggest the air isn't moving the way it should.

Two familiar problems, one root cause

It's worth pausing on the two roof-edge complaints that lead the list, because both come straight back to ventilation.

Ice dams begin with a warm roof deck. Heat leaking into a poorly ventilated attic warms the sheathing, melts the snow lying on it, and sends that meltwater running down to the cold eave, where it refreezes into a ridge of ice. That ice then backs water up under the shingles and behind the gutter, soaking the fascia and soffit. Good soffit intake keeps the deck closer to the outdoor temperature, which is what breaks the melt-and-refreeze cycle.

The first is adding more exhaust — ridge or gable vents — without checking the intake; if the soffit is blocked, the new vents have nothing to draw through, and you've solved the wrong half of the equation. The second is sealing the soffit up tight to keep pests out without providing proper venting, which trades a nuisance for a genuine moisture problem.
