The most expensive problem a gutter prevents is nowhere near the roof. It's in the soil under your house — and the connection is more direct than most homeowners realize.
Your gutters and your foundation are connected by a single path: the water your roof sheds. A working system carries that runoff several feet away from the house, keeping the soil against the foundation reasonably stable. A failing one drops it at the base of the wall, where repeated soaking makes the soil swell, shrink and move — the actual driver of settling, cracks and basement seepage. The gutter at the top of the chain decides what the foundation deals with at the bottom.
Ask a homeowner what protects their foundation and they'll usually point downward — to the concrete, the footings, maybe a sump pump. Almost nobody points at the roof. Yet the roof is where the water that threatens a foundation comes from, and the gutter is the first and most important thing standing between that water and the ground your house sits on.
The connection feels counterintuitive because the two ends are so far apart. A gutter is a strip of metal thirty feet up; a foundation problem is a crack in the basement wall. But there's an unbroken chain of cause and effect running between them, and once you can see it, a damp basement or a shifting foundation stops looking like a mystery and starts looking like a drainage problem with a clear origin.
Start with the volume of water in play
The reason any of this matters is scale. A roof is a large, angled collection surface, and every rainfall lands on all of it at once. A single ordinary storm sends a genuinely large volume of water off the roof in a short time — far more than lands anywhere else on the property, concentrated along the drip line at the edges.
Without a gutter, all of that pours off the eave in a curtain and lands in the same narrow band of soil right against the foundation. If you had to bet on where a house's roof-to-foundation drainage fails, the smart money isn't on the gutter being clogged, common as that is. It's on the discharge — the last several feet the water needs to travel to get clear of the foundation.
It's remarkably common to see a perfectly clean gutter feeding a downspout that ends right at the base of the wall, spilling its entire collected load into the exact spot the whole system was supposed to protect. The gutter did its job; the water was collected and dropped to the ground. Then it was simply let go two inches from the foundation, and all the collecting accomplished nothing. This is why water pooling near the foundation so often coexists with gutters that look fine from the yard — the failure isn't in the trough, it's in the last stretch.

Reading the signs from both ends
Because the chain spans the whole height of the house, its symptoms show up in two very different places, and connecting them is the skill.
At the top, the warning signs are the ones you'd expect from a stressed gutter: overflow during rain, water sheeting behind the trough, streaked siding, and eroded or trenched soil directly under the eave where runoff has been landing wrong.
